The Best Way to Ripen Avocados, According to Our Tests
Bananas ripen avocados by releasing ethylene gas, a natural plant hormone that accelerates the ripening process. You can speed up avocado ripening by placing them in a paper bag with a ripe banana, which traps the ethylene gas and causes the avocados to soften and become ready to eat in a couple of days.

I had heard this a long time ago in Venezuela but i dismissed it as a folk tale as “carburo,” ethylene, is an industrial gas used in welding.
Beware ignorance!

Ethylene gas will also ripen tomatoes and apples.

Yes, and peaches/nectarines, too. All of these fruits emit ethylene gas on their own, but bananas (especially ripe ones) do it much more and when trapped in the same area - the paper bag - will speed up the process considerably.

My problem is that avocados ripen too quickly.
I buy the 5 or 6/bag at Costco, bring em home, put 2 on the counter.
and the rest in the Fridge. The two on the counter ripen at a rate at which I can consume them.
Those in the fridge go into ‘slow mode’. And ripen later. I take 1 or 2 out onto the counter, and leave the rest in the fridge.
It works wonderful for me. I get the ‘cost benefit’ of Costco, as well as ‘time to enjoy’ the avocados.

The Oracle of Delphi was the Ancient Greek go-to for ethylene hazed enigmatic predictions of the future.
The oracle was believed to speak through the Pythia, an elderly priestess who would fall into a trance state and utter cryptic predictions about war, agriculture and other vital matters of the time.
the team found ethane, methane and ethylene in spring water located near the oracle. Ethylene, which has served as anesthesia in the past, is known to produce euphoric effects similar to those described by Plutarch.

All I know is you don’t put bananas in a cooler. When I was in high school I worked at a local grocery store. I was opening the store one Sunday morning when the produce truck arrived. I put all of the produce in the cooler. The Produce Manager was not happy with me on Monday morning when he saw all of the bananas in the cooler. The store had an unannounced sale on bananas that week.
