OT:Sanctions R Acts of War

The USA has a love of sanctions. And the use of sanctions has increased in frequency. And sanctions are imposed on nations that counter attack mostly.

Sanctions do have a death toll largely amongst infants & older seniors. And adverse effects on public health upon the sanctioned nation. Along with economic damage of the sanctioned nation.

I wonder if the representatives know a yes sanction will result in deaths. Or do they vote yes to demonstrate they are doing something to voice their displeasure of the actions of the sanctioned nation.

The fraction of the world’s economy subject to unilateral sanctions, for example, has grown from 5·4% in the 1960s to 24·7% in the 2010–22 period.

Its seems sanctions rarely work. 2 success use of sanctions.

In the 1920s, the League of Nations used a sanctions threat to prevent two border wars in the Balkans. In 1956, the United States threatened to withdraw support of British currency and block IMF loans to convince Britain to stop a war against Egypt.

However, the bigger the ideological differences between countries, the less likely sanctions are likely to work.

Yes, and don’t forget Pearl Harbor was about sanctions on Japanese oil. It can be a big deal.

Stopping Russian oil and keeping from markets is in the news from time to time, but experts say success will raise oil prices, which no one wants. Hence that is off the table. But extra tariffs on buyers might apply pressure.

Sanctions are easy. No troops required.

We did not stop the importation of Russian oil to EU. Russia simply add an extra step. Russia sold oil to India who mixed it with other oil imports, then refined it & sold it to the EU.
