OTOH, look who comes back:

Where have all the 707s, L-1011s, DC-10s and 727s that I used to fly besides the 747s?

Too expensive to operate: too much fuel, too much maintenance, too much crew.

Mostly scrapped. There’s a few MD-11s (basically an updated DC-10) still in freight service. And a few 727s in less developed parts of the world.

FedEx uses MD-11s in spite of their high operating costs because they’re dirt cheap to buy, and they only fly one round trip a day.
