OT: the death of the fool

In the past 24 hours only 13 boards have had more than 1 post. METaR is at the top with 88. I expect TMF to close all its boards soon citing lack of traffic. I’ll hang around until the end, but I think the end is nigh.

The fool has cut down their server expenses to what they are happy with assuming they are on the “cloud”.

A few hundred posts is not an expense these days.

The bigger issue for the fool is to remake or modernize these boards one day as a project. Why? Because the next investment craze will usher in a lot of potential clients for their subscriber products. The boards that have to stay are the individual company boards. Anyone signing up and never intending to come back is still a major marketing target for the fool. It would be very shortsighted to cut the boards out. The leads come from the boards. The political and social boards were not generating leads in all likelihood.

TMF runs on Amazon Web Services, so their cost is pretty much a fixed amount each month. What they can eliminate are a variety of personnel costs associated with managing the boards. Eliminating most of the boards reduces the cost because they let go the people who are no longer needed.

Two or three days ago, TMF log-in placed a “I’m a human” test and pushed to change
passwords. When sites go through this type of thing, they annoy real humans - to the
point where folks leave for a few days.
Combine that with the problems that occur to investment only sites when the market is
in the midst of the summer doldrums - and the economy is on the verge of a recession.

The boards are somewhat less interesting as a general interest site. And financial sites
are a dime a dozen. Selling the “Next Big Thing” from a site that at one time had
emphasized that an individual investor could do their own due diligence and manage
their own investments.

And we are promised some new boards one of these days. We are eager to see what they have to offer.

They also promised us, on a recent video, the top 10 investment mistakes they made, and the top 10 recommended stocks they would sell. Crickets for 2+ weeks, and both emails should have been sent by now.

Assuming TMF gets a significant part of their income from ads, the income from a board must exceed the cost of maintaining that board.

So boards like Kumquat Futures won’t likely pull in enough views to make its expense worthwhile.

How can we help TMF survive?

There’s likely an ad at the top of this post, click on it.

Who knows, the product/service being offered may be something you want.

TMF died when they started acting like the companies they started out skewering.

The boards which gain the most traction during times of economic/financial angst are those like METAR which offer pragmatic news and suggestions in an environment of (usually) polite and (sometimes) intelligent debate.

Yes, the end in indeed nigh. And I’ve greatly enjoyed conversing with y’all over the tears (decades!). I will be very sad when the board closes and we haven’t relocated to a new place to converse. And it will likely be too late by then.

Probably an opportune time to mention again that among the various places that TMF posters have moved to, poster Canonian has set up a discord server which can be found here:

Thanks! I just joined, but some of the main people (Wendy, etc) don’t appear to be there.

There are other places that TMF’ers have decamped to. It’s just one of a few spots where folks have gone to keep having the conversations that TMF doesn’t want happening here. Since this board has remained open, I expect that the folks for whom METAR has been their main board aren’t likely to pick up alternatives while it stays active.

There is a RELE Refugees group on Facebook which is fairly active. “Retire Early Liberal Edition”, the conversation runs the gamut.

I also don’t see any macroeconomic discussion there.
