OT: Tonga volcano

By now you all have probably seen videos of the tsunami caused by the undersea volcanic eruption or maybe some of the satellite videos of it. In some of those videos the shock wave is observable. It wasn’t just observable that way. Hours later reports from literally around the world began coming in of people hearing the sound of the volcano’s eruption.

Some Yukon residents woke up to loud sonic booms and shaking homes after an underwater volcano erupted across the Pacific Ocean.

The U.S. National Weather Service posted on Facebook that loud booming sounds heard in Alaska are the result of shock waves from an underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga that have finally reached North America.

It looks like the Krakatoa eruption may have lost its claim to being the loudest sound people ever heard on Earth.

Estimates for this eruption are a large VEI of 5.

Mt. Pinatubo, 30 years ago, and Krakatoa had a VEI of 6.

he height of the plume is a rough indicator of the eruption size. VEI-5 can have plumes 10-25 kilometers tall, and VEI-6 goes higher. But the plume height can be affected by many things and is only a rough indicator. At face value, it would put the Jan 15 eruption as VEI-6 (just) and the eruption of the previous day as VEI-5. In practice this may overstate the case.

I was not aware of how devastating this was before I posted. Tonga will be a long time recovering.
