Cannibalistic South Pacific islanders said that humans taste like pork. They called human meat “long pig.”
During World War 2, the elders (who remembered being cannibals although the custom had fallen out of practice) developed a taste for Spam because of its “corpsy” flavor. I almost puked when I read that. If I had ever wanted to eat Spam (NOPE!) that would have killed the impulse.
In J. Martaan Troost’s travelogue about living in Vanuatu “Getting Stoned with Savages” he suggests cannibalism hadn’t really fallen all that far out of practice, like maybe still going on. Short read and very funny.
Interestingly, his previous book “Sex Lives of Cannibals” about life on Tarawa had almost nothing to do with cannibalism.
