Pols have been wringing their hands for years “IP theft”, “currency manipulation” and more. Why didn’t much of anything happen for so long?

The U.S. government is boycotting the Beijing Olympics over human rights. Coke and Airbnb are still on board.

…activists say the risk of offending the rulers of the world’s second-biggest economy has caused the companies to stick with their deals and stay mum on China’s human rights abuses,…“All they can think about is the money,”

Many sponsors count China as one of their biggest markets; for U.S. semiconductor giant Intel, China represents 26 percent of its revenue, more than any other country. And Beijing has been quick to punish Western companies that criticize the authorities or even obliquely refer to topics China considers sensitive.

Intel drew China’s ire last month when it sent a letter to its suppliers asking them to avoid sourcing goods or services from the Xinjiang region.

Coca-Cola declined to comment,

Airbnb said its nine-year deal with the IOC, which began in 2020, is not "organized around individual Games,

Procter & Gamble declined to comment. Visa and Bridgestone didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Many of the companies hide behind their contracts with the IOC. One wonders, why the IOC doesn’t say something about China? Money?

Ah, the specter of “Filthy Lucre” raises its head…

Ironic, but then maybe not all that much… when it comes to $$$'s vs morality, the money prevails…

And as long as companies (and countries) get away with it, nothing will change…

New rule for English: The word “they” (as well as them and he and she) henceforth shall only be used for human beings and not for AI’s. Corporations, although ajudged persons by the SCOTUS, are actually AI’s and should be referred to as “it” in singular and “thei” in plural.

“All thei can think about is the money.”

To which sensible persons respond “Well, duh?” And then perhaps begin to wonder as to whether this problem of being ruled by (really hide bound slow idiot but very very single minded) AI’s needs more thought?

The Olympics can really only be hosted by authoritarian regimes since it’s a big “economic loser” for the host city. If you have to answer to the voters, there’s no way you can do it.

Maybe because Los Angeles is the city of Show Business as BigBusiness=BigCarney, both the Los Angeles Olympics made money for the city, first at the peak of the depression and second at the peak of capitalist bliss.

It can be done.

Oh, and I almost forgot, the city plans to have a fine profit hosting again in 2028. This time we hardly have to build a thing, only to bill the media as only our city knows how to do…

That is much too benign. We need a theme more in keeping with the increasing levels of corruption and sleaze evident in Shinyland.

Steve,

Thank you for the link to the unforgettable Minelli/Grey performance from Cabaret. Before becoming an advertising executive, my brilliant DW started her career as an actress playing a Kit Kat girl in a traveling production of Cabaret.

Our semi-annual trips to NYC for the latest Broadway Musicals and museum openings are more of the wonderful aspects of life that COVID has stolen from us in the “high risk” camp.

Since Omicron cases have exploded in our area, we don’t even dash into the store for bread or milk. We’re having everything delivered now.

Unfortunately, the Chinese are saying that we have to go all the way back to March of 2020, when we were wiping down every package brought into the house.

I never stopped wiping stuff down. Zero cost as I have lots of alky from 2020. I wipe down everything that goes in the freezer, because covid can survive the freezer. Things that stay at room temperature, like boxes of cereal and the mail, lay on the floor for a couple days before I handle them.
