Rutte was clear about the need for a boost in military budgets following reports that NATO will set a new spending target of 3 percent of GDP by 2030. The alliance’s current pledge — met by all but eight members — is to spend at least 2 percent of GDP on defense.
“It is time to shift to a wartime mindset," Rutte said. "And turbo-charge our defense production and defense spending.”
There’s a growing consensus among allies that the current 2 percent goal is not enough to implement regional defense plans and meet NATO’s capability targets, which are expected to be updated with more requirements next year.
So.
Higher taxes?
Higher deficit spending?
Cut climate warming & social safety net spending?
Probably it will vary by nation.
