Kalamazoo recently announced the city is buying up land downtown for a new arena. Supposedly, the arena itself is privately funded, but the promoter of the arena admits he does not have any tenents signed up. He talks about “maybe” attracting Kalamazoo’s minor league hockey team, which already has it’s own arena, and attracting teams from Whatsa Matta U, which has it’s own hockey and basketball arenas.

Back in the 70s, the panacea for struggling small cities with dilapidated downtowns was to build a convention center. Kalamazoo built one, and it has struggled financially ever since. South Bend, Indiana, built the Century Center at the same time. It also disappoints.
