Product announcements @ 10 AM PST!
Tons of improvements, the camera abilities over my iPhone 11 Pro Max are the most likely to catch me, the Watch also, I’m still at v5, so it could be boosted…
Interesting what they did with the Watch Ultra, so much in side a small unit…
Good upgrades all around I thought. I really liked what they did with the new “Dynamic Island” wrapped around the new smaller floating “notch” on the Pro. It makes it less obtrusive and more useful at the same time. I wonder what the implication is that only the Pro has the new A16 chip. Perhaps yields aren’t yet that great on the new 4nm TSMC process? I believe Apple always gets first dibs on any new process node at TSMC, so I doubt competition with the likes of AMD is the issue. Let the unfounded rumors begin!
Oh, and the new satellite SOS capability looks cool, but I can’t tell if it uses a special chip or antenna. From the tech specs, it only says this about it in footnote 7:
7. Available in November 2022. Service is included for free for two years with the activation of any iPhone 14 model. Connection and response times vary based on location, site conditions, and other factors. See apple.com/iphone-14 or apple.com/iphone-14-pro for more information.

Then I guess it is even more of an improvement over my 8+ camera.
I may actually upgrade this time.

There’s a stunning improvement in the 13 over my X. I’ll have to check this out…

The low light abilities f the 11 were quite good, surprising, actually, so now a couple versions later, I can’t wait, altho I will have to, actually… Too much else going on…
Should be overall pretty positive, so naturally the shares will maybe dump… So far, after hours is still flat, so, let’s see where we go tomorrow…
I can see some family jumping all over the Ultramarines Watch, the sporty & diving folk…Much younger than this grasshopper…

Does the A16 even use TSMC’s 4nm process? Because there was this … https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/30/apple-will-not-be-usin… … pretty recently.
In the past Apple has paid to secure preferential access to TSMC’s latest node, although I don’t recall news of that sort recently (I may have missed it). AMD has managed to secure 5nm although it’s likely there’s more capacity both through others releasing capacity back (with contract payments) and process improvement.

Well, that Gizmochina article is over 3 months old

But what I really want to know is if the A16 is based on ARMv9. I believe up to now, all Apple Ax chips have been built around ARMv8.

Then I would hazard a guess that the limited use of 4nm is a combination of three factors …
- Limited current yields on 4nm (N3 process?) driven by the new process size just starting up.
- Potentially using the smaller process for the M-series chips given the massive size of those chips. The M1 Ultras are circa 11x the transistor count of Intel’s i9-12900K. It’s hard to overstate how massive those chips are.
- Avoidance of LTA fees by ensuring complete use of the contracted 5nm process. The A-series is more than competitive enough and so a smaller process isn’t necessary & would be more expensive. More here … https://www.fabricatedknowledge.com/p/industry-structure-fab…
I’d suspect 3) & 2) most of all.
I’d suspect 3) [LTA fees] & 2) [M series chips hogging the 4nm process] most of all.
Thanks for the link.
Not sure about 2) though. I think Apple sells a lot fewer of the largest M1 and M2 chip varieties than A15 and A16 chips.
