The economics of pressing a vinyl record

Many musicians are going to vinyl, for reasons of nostalgia, authenticity, cover art, to offer something tangible, maybe better audio quality, too. I saw an interview with Jack White, who owns a vinyl printing shop. There was a question about where all the old machines ended up. What’s old is new.

I remember reading a story recently that a lot of the vinyl presses are converted CD presses which were converted from vinyl presses. Just like records the presses have gone in circles too.

Sturdy, well built, and still serviceable. You wonder if parts are still available or do you have to hire someone to make new parts.

Are they still made new? Who makes them?

Things used to be made to last. But now we are far more interested in making them wear out quickly so customer buys new. A sad tradition. Invented by the auto industry? Clever business men? Did the engineers object? Or just go along?
