The ozone layer is healing

Do you remember them all arguing that the ozone layer depletion was a hoax? Why is it that these anti-scientist keep being listened to?

Wall Street Journal has article today reporting that chlorine content in the stratosphere has declined 11.5% 1993 to 2020. That is probably due to changes in Freon.

Its a good example of success in a global air pollution problem. Even China was convinced to co-operate.

Reportedly, acid rain is not the problem it was 40 years ago either.

Good point. Yes, acid rain comes mostly from burning fuels especially coal containing sulfur. Burning low sulfur coal shipped in from Wyoming is a plus. Or installation of (costly) scrubbers. Progress has been made. And coal fired power plants continue to get more costly to operate.

Yes, progress is being made. (But you still have to lime your lawn to counteract acid rain.)

Some good news about ozone and global warming. Increased water vapor in the stratosphere affects both of them, and future increases in stratospheric water vapour risk amplifying climate change and slowing down the recovery of the ozone layer. Researchers in the UK have now done modeling work constrained by past satellite observations.

Their results show the high projections from many climate models in inconsistent with observational evidence. They write “Strikingly, around a quarter of CMIP [coupled model intercomparison project] models exceed even the upper 95th percentile of our constraint.”

Reading some encouraging things here, some I wasn’t aware of. Good news, good news.
