The Stupid Thing America is doing

We need massive growth in heavy industry. We need reinvestment. That takes raising the corporate tax rate.

This is what we are doing instead. It is stupid.

Tariffs do encourage companies to use more of their idle capacity in the U.S. That Should create jobs.

GE is moving mfg of washing machines from China to Kentucky.

Yes, uncertain future makes companies reluctant to invest in new capacity. But it’s easy to add another shift when you can sell at a profit. Tariff protection does help. (But consumers pay more and the govt needs the income to reduce deficit.)

Not one dollar beyond the marginal corporate tax rate. Not one dollar.

We have factories in the US up to the point where corporations pay their taxes versus reinvesting.

Very little and very few jobs.

Meanwhile the country is so unstable hiring has frozen. Interest rates are rising. Trouble is brewing.

I have posted press reports about several major manufacturing companies transferring more production to the US. Only Ford Motor, is closing a US factory, supposedly temporarily, supposedly for retooling, but Ford isn’t saying officially what it is being retooled for, or when it will reopen, which sounds fishy to me.

“Planners” constantly put out vacuous statements.

Appliance Park in Louisville employs about 8,000 workers and is home to five plants that produce washers, dryers, dishwashers and refrigerators as well as parts and components. GE Appliances also has manufacturing plants in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Connecticut.Jun 26, 2025

My comment the $490 million is the cost of a retooling of an old plant.

Yes, GE Appliances is significantly increasing its washing machine production in Louisville, Kentucky. They are moving production of over 15 front-load washer models from China to their Appliance Park headquarters in Louisville. This move is part of a $490 million investment to expand their U.S. manufacturing capabilities. While some GE laundry appliances are still made overseas, the company has committed to keeping certain models assembled in the USA.

Yes, GE Appliances is laying off employees. They announced a 4% reduction in their global salaried workforce, which is part of a larger restructuring plan. The layoffs are not impacting production workers at Appliance Park in Louisville.

Specifically, the Evansville, Indiana tech center closed as part of these layoffs. Additionally, GE Aerospace, a separate division of the former GE, is also laying off employees, impacting nearly half of the workforce at their Skenctity facility.

These layoffs are happening due to a combination of factors, including a challenging appliance industry and the need to streamline operations. GE Appliances is providing support to affected employees, including severance packages and outplacement services.

Which is good news to the people Ford is laying off in Louisville.

LOL

Yes GE will make 800 new jobs in Louisville.

Peanuts. We are in a trade war. Appliance sales are getting problematic. Tomorrow will they really be hired?

Which is to say - the consumer ends up paying the tariff.

Sure, high tariffs can cause some manufacturing jobs to be increased in the U.S. But when you look at the total impact on employment, the effect can be extremely negative.

Tariffs should be handled with a scalpel, not a sledgehammer.
