I found this on the paid side and thought it would be of interest here. Credit to BrianKnittel for the original post.
I would disagree on the “controlling” aspect. Shipping has multiple flavors - tankers, dry bulk, container vessels, etc. In the container segment, there is not a single Greek or Japanese liner company among the Top 5. The top names include MSC, Maersk, CMA CGM, Cosco (China), Hapag-Lloyd. If the Greek company or Japanese companies have vessels that are chartered-in by the larger companies - who is in control?
I can’t think of another industry where the a 40% market share is shared by 3 entities and that is thought to mean ‘control”.
I hear you. The container shipping segment was more clear cut. I think LNG shipping has similar nuances. But rather than dependency on major liner companies, the LNG vessel owners have a dependency on the gas owners and/or LNG liquefiers
