Overall the idea is to find a college where you can get a STEM degree at low cost. You’ll be a lot richer over time if you’re not graduating with a lot of debt.

Starting at a local community college is a good first step. Many are supported by local taxes and are inexpensive. Credits usually transfer to university.
State universities are also inexpensive compared to the best private schools.
You can get what you pay for at private schools but choose wisely. $100k/yr to study basket weaving (and party) is not for those who need student loans.
