Turbogenerator Gas Turbine for Flying EV VTOL

I’ve often wondered if you could put a small generator and fuel tank in an EV frunk with enough power output to recharge the battery during highway cruise. It could even be removable. That would eliminate “range anxiety”.

You mean, like a hybrid?

It’s a lot easier to stop every 3 hours to pee, snack, stretch, … and charge the car.

Love the tech breakthrough, but…

VTOL can all too easily become another means for wealth to abandon everybody else, impose their noise on them, just as private aviation has made the rich indifferent to badly designed and/or obsolescent and always underfunded airports and other forms of publicly used transportation.

Maybe it is time to bring back the ancient system check of the Greeks against wealthy pride: ostracism.

No. I talking about a removable generator where the drive train isn’t attached to the ICE, it’s just charging the battery.

It probably doesn’t make sense to carry around a heavy 300 mi range battery all the time if most of your daily driving is 40-50 miles tops

Actually EVTOLs have much lower noise profiles than helicopters. NASA measured a Joby takeoff or landing at less than 65 dB, 330 ft from the flight path.

That’s called a “series hybrid”. And there are vehicle models like this out there already today. I think I once read that some locomotives also work that way.
