If it was 100% profit, sure. It certainly wasn’t. The hallmark of the individual non-group market was lots of churn and customer acquisition costs, and you really had to protect yourself against adverse selection. It was expensive to compete in that market.
Yes. And if they become too aggressive and force the insurance companies to pay for anything and everything then the insurance companies won’t be able to turn a profit. And then the next year an insurance company won’t write policies there anymore. And if this continues for too long, nobody can write insurance there anymore, and the state has to set up its own “backup” insurer for those who can’t find a policy. Finally, the state begins to see vast swathes of its budget go toward insurance coverage, and since they pay for everything, they suddenly realize that they need to put strict limits on every form of care and expense. And then who will the next crazy person target? Maybe the governor, or the state secretary of health and human services, or someone else random in government?
It varies quite a bit by state. My health insurance premiums dropped by 60% when I moved from Texas to Washington State in 2006. That’s the difference between an elected State Insurance Commissioner presumably more accountable to the governed, and having a Republican Governor in Texas appoint an insurance industry lobbyist to the position.

It could be a matter of the health care costs where you lived in each state too. The ACA took effect shortly after I retired. I was considering moving to a less congested part of the same state. I compared cheap ACA plans in three other areas: one large city, one small city, one rural area, and metro Detroit. Detroit, and the other large city had rates significantly lower than the small town and the rural area.

They are not known for their veracity.
The leader of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, paid tribute to slain chief executive officer Brian Thompson and acknowledged that the health care system “does not work as well as it should” in an op-ed published in The New York Times on Friday.
There has been an “enormous outpouring of support” for Thompson and his loved ones after the UHC leader was shot and killed in New York City, Andrew Witty, the CEO of UnitedHealth Group, wrote, but he said company employees have also faced threats and vitriol online.
“No employees — be they the people who answer customer calls or nurses who visit patients in their homes — should have to fear for their and their loved ones’ safety,” Witty wrote.
“Nobody - be they patients or their relatives and friends - should have to fear about getting access to the care they are expecting from us, their insurance provider”. There, I fixed it for him.
Someone said recently that violence is what happens when people don’t have non-violent solutions to their problems.
Queen Victoria to the last Czar of Russia.
We all agree there should be no violence. We are not seemingly on the same page about the morality of 30k people dying without enough paid-for care. It is violence towards them.
That’s wrong.
Some people will genuinely expect their insurance to cover things that it simply doesn’t cover. Most health insurance doesn’t cover everything. But there will be some people - many people - who believe that their health insurance covers everything.
Of course, that situation is bad. Health insurance policies are dense and complex, full of legalese, and the formulae and formularies are hard for lay people to decipher. More transparency is needed. But no insurance policy - even public insurance policies - cover everything. For example, you’re not getting “experimental” treatments covered whether you’re under United Health or Medicare or the British NHS.
This is the case for more intolerance and violence.
Um, I think it’s the case for providing non-violent solutions.
You are not following along. You are assigning errant nonsense.
murdering a CEO is violence. It does NOT create an environment for dialog.
It emboldens more people to use it as a mechanism to make their voice heard.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and assume you’re ok with the violent insurrection on 1/6. If I’m incorrect, please feel free to denounce it.
That said, I’m certainly not justifying violence. But when people feel as if they do not have non-violent options to make their voices heard, some will resort to violence. It’s not a good thing, it’s just the world we live in. This is true for everyone, no matter their political leanings.
Your constant attacks against the “intolerant left” are bonkers. It’s like you’re incapable of acknowledging anything bad about the other side. Please prove me wrong.
Luigi did not even have UHC insurance.
The left is defending the murder of the CEO of UHC to score political points. It is ridiculous for people and particularly a sitting senator to insinuates “how else should people raise issues ?”
Not everyone on the left defends it, I certainly don’t. Waiting for you to denounce 1/6. If you’re not willing to denounce that violence, you should probably check yo self.
For those who missed it, the VP-elect has invited the subway strangler to attend the Army/Navy football game with him. The subway strangler will probably be a bigger hit than the kid who had mommy drive him to Kenosha so he could brandish his assault rifle in front of BLM demonstrators, and ended up killing two unarmed men.

Divi’s thinking is totally bonkers and totally consistent with the thinking of tens of millions of brain washed Fox Zombies. He gives me insight into the thinking of my evangelical in-laws who never discuss politics in front of me because they know that I was brainwashed by my college and law school experience.
He should invite Bernie Goetz while he is at it.
You guys are in a liberal woke bubble living in a fantasy upvoting each other and ashamed of living in this country. This is the reason why the left lost.
Americans had it with you guys insulting military vets like Daniel Penny who the VP is proudly taking to the game.
Luigi is a criminal who the intolerant left is hailing as a hero. No wonder you guys marched for Hamas terrorists.
No, we had it with your guy calling them suckers and losers.
How many times have I asked him that? He will NEVER answer this question because he supports it. He believes the big lie but is afraid to admit it. I would not be surprised if he has a certain flag hanging in his garage.
