US BEV sales last quarter

The just-ended Q2 saw EV sales drop 21% from a year earlier (which was down some from the second quarter of 2024). The 247,226 sales of last quarter were up slightly over the last two periods.

Overall, EV sales were 5.9% of the US market.

Just think what it would be if Americans had access to quality lower priced Chinese EVs.

If there is an interest for EVs, Chinese or otherwise. Even when EVs were $7.5K cheaper they weren’t exactly knocking the socks off the US auto market.

The Chinese EVs are $15-20k lower. And reportedly they’re pretty good. The bigger issue is that there is a possibility that they would rapidly take over the auto market (they also sell ICE vehicles) and essentially put Ford and GM out of business. Since the auto industry is “protected” politically, that can’t be allowed to happen. We already allowed it to happen to many other industries (anything formed out of plastic, anything made from textiles, etc). The smaller issue is that modern cars are “connected” and there is a fear that China, under certain circumstances, might use that connection for nefarious purposes.

I remember reading a few years back that China prohibited Teslas from being driven onto military or secured areas as they have 360° cameras built in.

Heck I have a fear that our government will take control of personal vehicles.
