Gilded Age Mansions: How America’s Elite Architects Built Monumental Estates
Between the 1860s and the early 1900s, a generation of architects trained in European traditions brought monumental design to the United States, building estates that combined Old World craftsmanship with New World ambition.

This is a continuously updated list of the largest Gilded Age/Historic Houses in both the United States & Canada. Precise square footage (sqft) is not always available, and please note that the numbers given on similar lists are often unsubstantiated or exaggerated.

The Rise of the Nine-Figure Listing

Outside Tampa, a French revivalist property listed for $115 million has a bowling alley with a private 1950s-style diner, a car museum and a go-kart circuit. In Los Angeles, a 70,000-square-foot compound asking $400 million with two houses totaling 39 bedrooms, four kitchens, three swimming pools, a hammam and an airport security-style X-ray machine.

The age of the nine-figure listing is upon us.

This year has proved to be a record one for $100 million listings, with more homes listed at or above that supersized price tag than at any other time in history, according to Redfin.

How can you possibly justify living in a house w 39 bedrooms. It has to be a prestige home; an investment. Great place to entertain. But a pain to maintain.

This has to be another aspect of the wealth divide. Lots of ego. Maybe a sharp deal maker.

Never saw the need for more that a 3BR home, but Inlaw has moved on up to 4BR, plus study, office spaces, more places to keep stuff! 4 car garage, I can see if one is a workshop, but 2 cars, boat, do eat space… The monster homes any larger, maybe more full time guests, or kids that never left the nest… It’s another world, full time hired help, etc… Upstairs/Downstairs comes to mind…

Even smaller institutions such as Caltech have seen large gifts. Some 25 years ago…

And more recently…

MIT got $350 million in 2018. Harvard got $500 million in 2021 from a fellow named Zuckerberg.

I would suggest calling it the Meretricious Age.

Yeah, I had to use the thesaurus to find that one.

Made me look! It’s a crazy time, while we could have moved into a bigger, more expanded home, by that time our kids had moved along, and guests were just weekends or an overnight here n there.. It’s bad enough, packrat that I am, more space would have allowed even more ‘stuff’, now unneeded… My imagination on all that furniture, boggling..
