USPS Package Deliveries

Just curious as to why the mail ladies always throw packages and boxes on the ground rather than dropping them in the mailbox. Our mailbox is something like 15" X 10" X 10" so it’s plenty big enough but they always throw non-envelopes on the walkway to the house.

The boss gets what seems like a couple of deliveries per day from QVC and they are always laying on the ground and never in the mailbox. If it rains forget it she gets wet duds that day.

Any thoughts on why the USPS does this?

You could try asking your local post office.

We have a mail slot into the garage. They normally place boxes near our front door but that is easy for them because it is between our mail and the neighbors mail.

I’d ask at your local post office as this sounds like it’s something about your mail carrier. For us, if something doesn’t fit in our mailbox, the mail carrier actually drives up our driveway and puts all the mail on the step near the back door which is also under a covered porch, so it’s all out of the weather.

Sounds like something going on locally that your post master should be able to address. I’d ask there.

Several issues with asking at the local Post Office:

  • Rarely have the same mail person from day to day.

  • Mail persons ignore sign to place packages in oversized mailbox.

  • Waiting in line at our Post Office is like going to the Zoo. No one knows how to stand in line nor do they know that the Post Office doesn’t pack packages. You are responsible for packing your own boxes. Also the boxes and packing materials are not free.

  • Asking for a manager/supervisor at our Post Office will result in the boss of the day with the standard answer: “Really? He/She will look into it.”

As an aside we had to rent a P.O. Box at the Post Office for our meds to circumvent theft and meds laying on the sidewalk in 95 degree weather. The rent on the box goes up every year too.

Any chance of setting up an internet attached camera? It would allow you to check in on it and maybe give you a motion alert to check for packages.

We’ve got those but it doesn’t help when we’re not at home. Also buying an oversized mailbox so we wouldn’t have to ask neighbors to watch for our mail while on vacation was a costly mistake.

My cell goes off all day long (squirrels, neighbors, bicyclists, dog walkers, cars, etc). My pocket sounds like there’s a party going on down there.

In some places. At my last house I had the same person five days a week, baring vacations. If you are fortunate enough to have such consistency talk with them rather than going above their head to someone at the post office. It can’t hurt to leave something for them at Christmas time either. I favor a $25 gift card for the local major supermarket, though with inflation that might get raised. (Technically the limit is $20; screw that.)

If your address is eligible (not high density property’s - Apts/Condos) you might want to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery. It gives you a heads up on what is being delivered for the day with scanned images (size restricted) of most of the mail pieces.

I’ve found it a useful tool, YMMV.

I’ve had the same experience as RHinCT and handle it the same, talk & EOY gift. Had the best Letter Carrier ever until she retired 3 years after I did. Helped immensely when I had a 2nd residence. Didn’t know I was violating the limit either.

We already use Informed Delivery on both the home address and the P.O. Box. It gives us photos of the various pieces of mail we are supposed to receive however it only gives a tracking number for the packages.

Again this doesn’t explain why they always throw the packages on the ground and place the mail in the mailbox.
