Volkswagen’s small and cheap electric vehicle, which will supposedly cost less than $22,000 (€20,000)
As for the powertrain, it is still too early to talk about precise specifications. We expect a small battery pack, perhaps around 40 kWh. This could provide a range of around 150 to 175 miles.
*This subcompact electric car should arrive in dealerships around 2027. *
The U.S. is not expected to be on the list of countries where VW will sell this cheap subcompact EV.
Of course not, Americans like big expensive vehicles. VW only sold 4 or 5 million VW beetles from 1964 to 1974 within the US.
No market for cheap new vehicles here. No way.
Husband and I are taking careful care of our horrible old Renault Duster (I have never before dealt with such a hideously bad transmission)(and every auxiliary system from AC to radio is hopeless to repair) so as to make it last until the Mexican BYD’s or similar are available here.
Was the new tariff rate settled at 60%? I thought talk was 100%.
Recall the piece I posted separately: chatter about BYD looking at buying the Chrysler HQ in Auburn Hills, and the plants in Brampton and Windsor. That would give BYD a big production base in the USMCA zone.
My understanding is that if BYD is building cars in Mexico, under NAFTA they’re allowed to be exported to the US (of course, they’d have to satisfy US safety & emissions regulations)
It is not US production facilities that matter a lot. It is where the materials AND components in the vehicle are sourced. China-sourced materials and components won’t be eligible for much of what the US and state govts (if any) offer as rebates, etc. No exemption from tariffs, so the cost of the car would be quite high–and the price higher.
