WalMart Leaves Portland Oregon

Walmart will close its last two stores in crime-plagued Portland, Ore., as the city contends with a relentless wave of shoplifting that has hammered retailers.

The two stores, located in the North and Southeastern sections of the Rose City, will shutter on March 24

In the fall of 2021 Walgreens closed 5 San Francisco stores due to product theft.

And I remember Apple store have had theft problems.

Outlier random problem or a new trend that will require severe retailer actions to combat theft?

In economic terms this is an ‘externality,’ the thieves’ gain is the neighbourhood’s loss. It’s not a problem for retailers to fix, it’s a problem for the neighbourhood to solve.
