Simply put, the Colorado River no longer provides enough water for all the development that relies on it.

And the states cannot agree on cutbacks that would endanger the sacred cow of economic growth. So Supreme Court here we come.

It’s worth noting that the developer behind California’s biggest planned AI data center is already suing to get water from the Colorado (after promises it would run on recycled wastewater).

Water users in the American Southwest confronted on Friday the strong possibility that cities and farms in the region must reduce Colorado River use by hundreds of billions of gallons after the Trump administration released a new management plan for the coming decade.

The document, published by the federal Bureau of Reclamation, outlines a 10-year management approach that could adjust to changing hydrological conditions that affect the river’s flow, with operations updatable every two years. The agency proposed cuts in water allotments originally suggested by Arizona, California and Nevada, which make up the river’s Lower Basin. Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming, the region’s Upper Basin, could make voluntary conservation measures.

A very good reason to locate new data centers where water is abundant. The Midwest has lots of rivers. The corn belt does very well without irrigation.

Yet data centers continue to be planned & built in region with water scarcity. Well once AI takes over CEO’s jobs that will stop. LOL

Just for the record, the corn belt uses lots of irrigation to smooth out the irregular natural rainfall, particularly during critical times for plant development. That is 1) early, 2) dry spells, 3) any other time the moisture content is deemed insufficient. Over 90% of that is most areas is done by center-pivot irrigation drawn from deep well acquifers.

The southern and western portions of the massive High Plains Aquifer (specifically the Ogallala portion underlying the western and southern edges of the agricultural breadbasket) are significantly receding due to heavy irrigation pumping outpacing natural recharge. However, the core eastern Corn Belt relies mostly on shallow, glacial-deposit groundwater and rainfall rather than deep aquifer mining

As can be seen while driving, the corn belt uses some irrigation, but not “lots”. In Illinois we find about two million acres that are irrigated. This is out of 27 million acres farmed. So, less than 10%.

Kansas and Nebraska gets too little rain and irrigates to grow corn. They are pumping down their aquifer when too far from a river.

The eastern part of the corn belt has abundant water and dry farms.
