I wonder what the tariff is on that?
intercst
Waymo just got a permit to test and provide AV rides from LA to San Diego.
Less than buying Jaguars from Austria, paying the tariffs on that, retrofitting them out, and putting them in service?
Some numbers:
$30,000 chinese EV
100% tariff is $30,000
buying 100,000 of these, the tariff cost is $3b
Alphabet made $35b net income on $100b revenue in Q3 2025 (amazing)
Then $3b tariff cost is less than 10% of one quarter’s net income.
So Alphabet can certainly afford it, and hey, they would help fund the US government.
I don’t know if the business ROI supports this expense, but Alphabet can easily afford it.
But wait, it gets better.
OBBBA grants 100% depreciation on qualifying assets - like vehicles that weight 6000 lbs. or more. I don’t know what model Zeeker that is but at least one model weighs over 6k lbs.
I wonder why US manufacturers haven’t developed an EV Minivan?
OK VW has the ID Buzz. But at $60k, certainly not affordable for the middle class.
https://www.autoblog.com/news/vw-pauses-id-buzz-production-amid-weak-sales-and-60k-price-tag
** Volkswagen paused ID. Buzz production due to weak demand and high pricing.*
** The ID. Buzz costs about $20,000 more than top gas-powered rivals.*
** Lack of affordability and advertising is seen as the core issue.*
Also range is <250 miles.
According to AI 35k were sold in 2023. ~1100 in 2024. ~2500 in 2025.
Honda, Toyota & Chrysler are selling 20k ICE units per quarter.
Zeekr prototypes with latest Waymo AI Driver generation 6 used in testing in Detroit:
If you’re familiar with the white Jaguar I-PACE SUV driving around some cities, like Washington, D.C., that’s our fifth-generation Driver. Our sixth-generation Driver is what’s coming next. It will be on a Zeekr vehicle. We’ve also announced Waymo Driver integration on the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
We’ll have the Jaguars and our new sixth-generation, more weather-proof Driver on the Zeekr RT. Folks may have already seen some of those cars bouncing around late this summer, but that was part of our Novi test and validation operations
