In Godfather II, Hymnan Roth (Lee Strasberg) says to Michael Corleone, “We’re bigger than US Steel”, truly a remarkable achievement.
How about this? Amazon is about to deliver more packages than the US Post Office. This year it will be 6.9 billion to 6.3 billion, and Amazon’s growth will put it on track to take the crown by 2028, possibly sooner because:
The new USPS-Amazon contract is being negotiated, and Amazon has pulled out. The USPS is demanding that all packages to be delivered be put up for auction and Amazon is refusing. I assume that’s because there is still about 15% of the country where Amazon hasn’t rolled out (or it’s economically unfeasible) delivery, and USPS knows it could “gouge” on that segment, while being selectively competitive in others. Amazon, naturally, wants a flat bulk rate so they can do the same - in reverse.
Depending on how it goes, Amazon might overtake the USPS by next year.
(I’m really not sure how the algorithm works. I ordered something a couple days ago which went to the Amazon warehouse nearest me, but from there it’s being delivered USPS, even though I have other Amazon deliveries from that same warehouse coming both Saturday and Sunday.)
