What Does Populist Zohran Mamdani Potentially Mean for New Yorkers Economically

in early June, Mamdani did an event with Khan, praising her and former antitrust enforcer Zephyr Teachout and discussed “taking on corporate power, lowering the cost of living and building an economy that works for working people.”

Mamdani linked his campaign with anti-monopoly arguments, focusing on the cost of living and blaming well-known villains like the utility giant Con Edison, suggesting that the city fund challenges to the utility’s rate increases in dockets. He proposed a ban on non-compete agreements in New York City, which was one of the core goals of former Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. And he discussed ending junk fees and predatory contracts.

riding a wave of young voters angry about the cost of living to defeat the entrenched party machine that has controlled New York politics for decades.

His financial support came from small donors and public campaign funds provided by New York City’s unusual election system, and his base was younger voters upset at the high cost of living.

Mamdani will be taking on established ensconced agreements made with establishment democratic mayors throughout the years. His work will be cut out for him. I expect the establishment will fight him tooth and nail.

To give you a sense of the level of rage and fear among the superwealthy, billionaire John Catsimatidis, the CEO of grocery chain Gristedes, said that if Mamdani won, he would close down his chain of New York supermarkets.

Establishment elite Cuomo’s financial support came from Wall Street, billionaires like Bill Ackman, as well as the real estate industry. The Democratic establishment went all-in.

Interesting that Democratic and Republican establishment billionaires joined hands and poured over $25 m, and yet lost it.

I post about this yesterday, and a big loss for the bipartisan culture of corruption in American was deemed an inappropriate topic. {{ LOL }}

I think what is important is that he will attempt to bring down the cost of living for the working class in NYC. The establishment do like their monopolies. I wish him luck.

NYC has high taxes. It can easily make the new mayor a demagogue.

Reportedly, a group that does not like him, is pushing for his citizenship (he is an immigrant) to be revoked and he be deported, by leveraging some relic of the 1950s Commie hysteria.

I’m all in favor of bringing back the Trust Busters. This idea is fundamental to the US Constitution embodied in the concept of “Checks and Balances.” No one should have too much power.

New York has electrical power problems and is headed for more. What is his alternative to this “well-known villain”?

Getting elected is about the message not necessarily having a plan or even being effective.

AI Overview

While Richard Nixon is generally considered a conservative figure, his presidency saw the implementation of several programs and policies that could be considered left-leaning, particularly in the areas of environmental protection, healthcare, and social welfare. He established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and proposed a comprehensive national healthcare plan. Additionally, Nixon’s “New Federalism” policy aimed to devolve power and resources to state and local governments, which could be seen as a shift away from federal control.

Here’s a more detailed look:

The creation of the EPA in 1970 is a landmark achievement in environmental policy, signifying a commitment to addressing pollution and protecting natural resources.

Nixon proposed a national health insurance plan, the Comprehensive Health Insurance Act, which, while not fully enacted, included provisions for employer-sponsored insurance, state-run health insurance plans, and an expanded Medicare program.

Nixon’s “New Federalism” policy aimed to shift power and resources away from the federal government and towards state and local governments, potentially leading to more localized and responsive social welfare programs.

The establishment of OSHA in 1970 aimed to improve workplace safety and health, and Nixon also signed into law the Clean Air Act of 1970.

The term “Nixonomics” refers to Nixon’s economic policies, which included a tax bill that repealed the investment tax credit and removed millions of low-income individuals from the tax rolls.

I mean you’re right, he did. He also finally caught osama without having to invade a country or start a war. He also enacted the ACA which was a major hope and change he ran on that persists to this day. He also navigated us out of the great recession commenably which was another hope and change he ran on. And for those who care he enacted quite a few lgbtq friendly polcies that he also ran on. So he did follow through on quite a lot of the policies he ran on his hope and change agenda. The libya and syria thing werent campaign pomises he broke but yea more US involvement in foreign affairs that seemingly no president can manage to dodge/navigate away from
