Who is Hiring Right Now?

When a company is hiring, it usually bodes well for investors. It may mean it is expanding its services, offers new ones or perhaps adds new locations to its business. It could also mean the company is hiring technology experts to train staff and new employees. A current example would be the hiring of security experts to combat the documented rise in ransomware during COVID-19 or prevent network traffic to be hijacked*, both even more acute dangers when companies allow their employees to work from home using their home networks and often their own devices. Non-company networks and devices are only as secure as the employee keeps them–the company’s chief security officer (CSO) has no direct control over any of it.

*In April ZDNet reported that traffic meant for more than 200 of the world’s largest content delivery networks (CDNs) and cloud hosting providers was suspiciously redirected through Rostelecom, Russia’s state-owned telecommunications provider. The affected companies “are a who’s who in the cloud and CDN market, including big names such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Akamai, Cloudflare, GoDaddy, Digital Ocean, Joyent, LeaseWeb, Hetzner, and Linode,” https://www.zdnet.com/article/russian-telco-hijacks-internet…. The article has links to a full list of victim networks.

In the past, to check on a company’s hirings, I’d periodically check Glassdoor not only for employee ratings of the CEO and the working conditions at the company but also to see if my company was hiring. Glassdoor now forces you to sign up. I now use LinkedIn, sign-up also required. When I checked two days ago, I found a list of Who is Hiring Now that includes many companies followed on this board.

Hiring in 2020 is nothing like the hiring described in William H. Whyte’s, The Organization Man where recruiting was managed by company recruiters and most hiring consisted of inside promotion. Today, despite the use of fancy machine learning and artificial intelligence that is still in its infancy and is fraught with serious problems such as built-in bias, hiring is more inefficient than in the past: productivity as well as employee retention has declined. A surprising “40% of US companies have outsourced much if not all of the hiring process to recruitment process outsourcers, which in turn often use subcontractors, typically in India and the Philippines. The subcontractors scour LinkedIn and social media to find potential candidates,” most of whom are not looking for a job (!), according to Peter Cappelli of the Wharton School of Business. The rest of the companies usually dispense with internal recruiters and leave the hiring managers to figure out what a job requires. It is estimated that on average US companies spend $4,129 per US job and many times more for managerial jobs. A staggering 66 million jobs are filled here in the US per year and a total of $20 billion gets spend on human resources vendors; most of it goes to hiring. Mr. Cappelli’s conclusion:

“Businesses have never done as much hiring as they do today. They’ve never spent as much money doing it. And they’ve never done a worse job of it.”

For those of you faced with the pains of hiring and firing; for those of you looking for a job, or for those curious about modern day recruiting, I can highly recommend Peter Capelli’s Recruiting, an easy-to-read article, devoid of the usual abbreviations and tech jargon. It appeared in the 2019 May-June issue of the Harvard Business Review, as a three article package, https://hbr.org/2019/05/recruiting. All three articles are eye openers on current hiring practices, the problem of employee retention (companies steal employees from each other) and the difficulty of recent graduates finding a decent job (to save money, company’s only want “experienced” job applicants).

Sorry about the double post.

It didn’t catch it since I used my laptop with a small screen. It sorely needs a new keyboard but until last week the Apple store was still closed.

Thanks…good job!!!
A few on your JOB OPENING LIST that I own: VEEV, SQ, DDOG, OKTA and CSCO!

Riskier, but MORE IMP TO ME, are owning Companies which might help defeat THE VIRUS. Own some MRNA, NVAX and EBS, so far…hoping there are others. Stj

At least in IBM’s case, they are probably laying off more positions than they are hiring. I think they tried to hide the fact that they were doing layoffs due to the fact that there were hiring in other positions. But some reports have the layoffs last week crossing 4000 mark.

IBM is hiring people for more than 3,000 open positions

https://techcrunch.com/2020/05/22/ibm-confirms-layoffs-are-h…

at the moment, I wouldn’t trust hiring numbers to be completely accurate. Even if advertised, many companies may be pushing out or delaying the decision but due to the difficulty of getting reqs approved internally, they keep the posting open and candidates warm.

I just got an offer out to fill an open position but I know others that have openings but told to delay the process as the Q2 and H2 numbers become clearer.

That is my understanding of IBM as well. It could apply to other large companies as well. You need that information to get a true picture, but unfortunately companies can manage their lay-offs in order to make discovering that difficult.

In terms of job postings and hiring, the two are not always the same. We have largely stopped hiring, for example, but I don’t think we’ve actually pulled job posting, for example.

Also, of critical importance: The quality of the positions needed.

What is the % of positions which are earmarked for customer service/support?
Of the technical staff, how many are in Research and Development?

Hiring is a sticky mess which include noise (open positions which haven’t been closed, A single requisition which funnels 100’s of people to the business, ghost positions which are available, but not advertised, etc.)

Its a good topic for discussion, but the data is… noisy.

When a company is hiring, it usually bodes well for investors. It may mean it is expanding its services, offers new ones or perhaps adds new locations to its business. Excellent point IM. Thanks for putting this post together, but for me the numbers don’t really mean anything out of context. I don’t care how much the raw numbers are, but rather how they fit into the whole. So I have added the total employee numbers and figured out what percentage your numbers represent.

A tiny bit of background.

  • I got my numbers from the Profile tab on Yahoo! Finance. I don’t know when or how the numbers were compiled, so just keep that in mind when seeing what I have come up with.
  • Some of the companies showed two numbers. Like OKTA indicated 200 and 143. In that case I took the higher number, which shouldn’t matter too much. The exception would be MongoDB which both 161 and 600 which is a pretty significant difference.
  • Don’t use any of this for decision making! If something you see is interesting just ping Investor Relations at the relevant company for the most accurate story both on job listings and total employees.

Thanks Jeb

for completing what I started. As you stated, the raw numbers are meaningless. I agree, they are only the stepping stone for further investigation. The positions to be filled as percentage of total employees give a much clearer picture. For example AYX’ hiring percentage is only 5.2%, consistent with their cautious guidance; DDOG is 17%, a numbers consistent with their own more enthusiastic guidance. Were one of our rapidly growing companies to give terrific guidance but only hire 0.8%, it would immediately raise a red flag and demand further investigation.

Periodically checking the hiring practices of the companies I own (minuscule portion, of course) allows me to see the trend. To me the trend is more important than the actual numbers as they may be somewhat inaccurate or not up to date. Should one of our rapidly growing young companies suddenly stop hiring, I would conclude that their growth prospects have changed significantly and investigate further to see if I should sell.

To jdc115 and bjurasz’ points, Peter Cappelli elucidates in the above referenced article that the listed numbers of open positions may be inaccurate for several reasons:

  1. companies may post “phantom jobs,” fishing for candidates and if somebody terrific applies, create a job for him or her, a practice Peter Cappelli advises not to use.

  2. Jobs may also stay up after the position has been filled, “to keep collecting candidates for future vacancies or just because it takes more effort to pull the ad down than to leave it up.”

  3. Job openings may be posted “by unscrupulous recruiters looking for résumés to pitch to clients elsewhere.”

I suspect large companies are much more likely to engage in these behaviors than our rapidly growing, small companies, the “Silicon Valley gazelles” (although several of them are not headquartered in Silicon Valley). They have fewer resources and less time to waste.

As you pointed out, the percentage of employees to be hired is of course only one way to help assess a company’s prospects and should not be the sole determinant.

I.M.

Hi GDavenport,

The links I provided for each company give a complete list of all jobs and their locations. For companies I own, I always go the the company’s website. If you check Alteryx’ career openings, you’ll find each job as well as locations described on the right-hand side, https://alteryx.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/AlteryxCareers/4/refre….
