Today’s Wall Street Journal has article reporting that railroads are reopening their hump yards. Many were closed as part of the most recent efficiency improvement program, precision scheduled railroading. But as traffic increases hump yards are faster and more efficient.
Norfolk Southern reopened its Belleview, OH yard. Can handle about 1900 cars daily in 6 hrs vs 1200 in 11 hrs. NSC also opened a second yard in Macon, GA, for a total of six operating and five idle.
Union Pacific also reopened a hump yard in Fort Worth, TX to reduce switching at West Colton, CA.
