2nd Covid Booster Wears Off Rapidly

Also not many Americans, including myself didn’t obtain the 2nd booster.

The Italian study, which is a pre-print review and re-analysis of prior studies and has not been peer-reviewed, suggests boosters are effective in the short term to restore protection against the virus. But over just a few months, that wanes quickly.

“Booster doses were found to restore the VE [vaccine effectiveness] to levels comparable to those acquired soon after administration of the second dose; however, a fast decline of booster VE against Omicron was observed, with less than 20% VE against infection and less than 25% VE against symptomatic disease at 9 months from the booster administration,” the authors wrote in the paper released Wednesday.

According to the CDC, less than a third of Americans have had a first booster dose at any point since they became available, and only about 5% of Americans have had a second booster dose.

odd, everyone we know who’s had the vaccine, has done both boosters… Looking at a third one… Rumors of a new formulation is making me hesitate…

Meantime my primary care physician climbed the ladder, director or some such, no suggested replacement, nothing… Irritating… PA’s are covering, they say, but now the PA I was to see later this month also bailed, so next opening was August! No emergencies, but the gaming is a tad upsetting. OTOH, they were useless in finding shots, too… And this is NorCal! Might as well be FL!

Looking at a third one… Rumors of a new formulation is making me hesitate…

Not me as the new booster is supposedly formulated to deal with the Omicron variant. This one I will take.
I still wear a mask in the store.

Same here, on both the mask wearing and taking the updated vaccine once it’s available.

I won’t hesitate as far as the new one, I’m only hesitating on looking for the 3rd booster that was rumored, in case there is a new formulation… Rather get the latest stuff!

Yes, still wear masks in all stores, avoiding restaurants unless it’s outside, still keep/use sanitizer/wipes, etc… DW does the groceries, wears mask, and a rubber glove, she found it works best to open the filmy plastic bags…

I do the driving, cart offload, and load into the house, waiting in the truck while she shops, we have Excel sheets made up for either Grocery, or Costco shopping, I do go into Costco because of the heavy stuff, water, etc…

So far so good…

I was waffling on getting my second booster (4th shot) thinking I would wait for the new formulation. But seeing the rising covid data in wastewater monitoring, and 90% of the people in the grocery store no longer masking, I went ahead and got it about a month ago. I had all Moderna before that so went with Pfizer this time in an attempt to broaden my immunity. I’ve never stopped masking.

The only reason I didn’t get my second booster is that I’m not eligible.

I’m more cautious now than I was last summer for these reasons:

  1. The wastewater viral load is at least 10 times higher.
  2. Breakthrough infections are FAR more common now than was the case a year ago.
  3. Long COVID is STILL an issue. There doesn’t appear to have been much progress in figuring out how to stop COVID from morphing into Long COVID.

Additionally, what passes for a “mild” case can be nasty. Even the slightest fever stops me from doing anything. I hate having a stuffy nose, because I hate the feeling of suffocation. I can’t even escape by sleeping, and I hate awakening to the feeling of suffocation. I hate dealing with a runny nose, because it’s so messy. I prefer to sniff and swallow if possible. Nose blowing requires dropping what I’m doing to grab a tissue and blow my nose. Then I have to run to the bathroom to wash my dirty hands so I don’t contaminate things. I hate sneezing, because it’s so loud and messy. I hate having to drop what I’m doing to cover my mouth and then run to the bathroom to wash my dirty hands. (At least I can skip that second step if I sneeze onto my arm.) (I prefer to stop or depower sneezes, and I don’t care if people say that’s cheating.)

How did it get to the point that being out sick for over a week is considered to be normal? In my entire lifetime, I have NEVER been out sick for more than a week at a time.

The only reason I didn’t get my second booster is that I’m not eligible.

I don’t wanna get into your business, but with your “Old School Fool” badge, I’d assumed you were at least 50 years old, which makes you eligible per CDC. (Also, anyone can “self-attest” to being moderately immunocompromised. There’s plenty of vaccine.)
