One model of Elon Musk’s success is that he’s willing to take risks and do unconventional things to a degree that others in the field are not. That he’s willing to try new things and approaches, even if there’s a material chance they not might work.
IOW, his “secret sauce” is that he’s willing to make mistakes that others would not. The idea is that he is able to recover from his mistakes quickly enough, and succeed enough with his unconventional approaches when they do work out, so that on balance there’s more success than costs of failure.
The key, though, is that correcting from a mistake - or getting enough success from the gambles that pay off - doesn’t make the mistake not a mistake. On the whole it might be advantageous to have a CEO that makes precipitous decisions without getting bogged down in risk-aversion - but when that CEO makes a mistake, it’s still a mistake.
