Biggest IT Budget Priorities for 2019

Not necessarily predictions, but real-world observations from some people involved in tech.

I’m a big fan of Mike Cowden. He’s a very smart guy and the lead of my company’s data engineering/science division. Slalom Build.

Here’s his thoughts. I really agree with what he says here. So the question is…which of our companies provide critical services or products core to business operations that will drive value and efficiencies?

Mike Cowden: I’ve seen a bit of a “shiny object” mentality over the last five years; there’s so much advancement in technology with AI and IoT and ML. There have been a lot of companies that have been dabbling. And so I think the focus will shift next year to ensuring these technologies really drive value. We’re going to hear a lot words like: “value,” “efficiency,” and “putting technology to work for the company.” It’s been fun to play around and try out all these new technologies, but I think that CTOs are going to be under a lot of pressure to focus on what’s going to drive value to both the top-line and bottom-line, and push forward that business strategy.

The primary issue constantly raised is data monetization. AYX as one. MDB another.

Security was mentioned as it always is. ZS.

Edge IoT - Pivotal, Nutanix.

AI and ML constantly mentioned but it sounds like no one can specify why, just that it is.

Augmented and virtual reality. This is a more nascent area. May be some new companies in regard.

Anything that makes employees lives better and enables greater collaboration. TEAM.

There are actually many. In the end “digital transformation”. DOCU as an example. Pivotal is this in spades. Only 14 new customers last Q - sigh. But worth a renewed look again. Those who use it are transformed and reborn. But you can’t make companies use it if they don’t want to.

Those are the core areas. No sense convoluting it w anymore.
