Following a thorough assessment of several Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technologies, SaskPower has selected the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 for potential deployment in Saskatchewan in the mid-2030s.
“This is an important milestone as Saskatchewan works towards a cleaner, more sustainable future,” said Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SaskPower.
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced late last year they are also going with the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 for the existing Darlington nuclear power station.

However, clean electricity is not the most important sector for CO2 emissions and air/water pollution. Canada has very dirty fossil fuel business that drives their CO2 emissions sky high. And besides CO2, the mining, drilling and processing of fossil fuels in Canada produces massive quantities of toxic materials released to the air and water. Saudi Arabi, Australia, Canada and USA lead G20 world countries in per capita CO2 emissions.
