Coffee, the alternate panacia

On the heels of the hype about GLP-1s as being a cure for a wide rage of ills, the local “news” last night, trotted out more propaganda about coffee.

Safe says there’s also evidence that drinking coffee can help you live longer. He went so far as to call coffee a ‘miracle’ drink.

ooohh, “miracle drink”. Where does it rank against the silver suspension that convicted con man Jim Bakker was touting as a COVID cure?

Administration of caffeine, a major component of coffee, to Swiss mice at doses of 80 or 100 mg/kg body weight 60 min prior to whole-body lethal dose of gamma irradiation (7.5 Gy) resulted in the survival of 70 and 63% of animals, respectively, at the above doses in contrast to absolutely no survivors in the group exposed to radiation alone.

There is something wrong with this study. Ya think?

The antioxidant and radioprotective effects of caffeine have been published for over half a century. For example, from 1978:

Abstract:
Reproductive death of cultured Chinese hamster fibroblasts in stationary and exponential growth phases after gamma irradiation was studied. After cell irradiation in a stationary phase at 1200 rad and postirradiation incubation in conditioned medium before resowing for 5 hrs, the survival rate increased almost 5 times due to the reparation of potential-lethal injuries. Under the effects of sodium caffeine-benzoate (4 mg/ml) effect on cells in a stationary growth phase for 5 hrs before irradiation, the survival rate increased; protection level was almost the same as in case of reduction in a conditioned media. Modification factor of dose curve incline was 1.3. Caffeine protective effect may be conjectured to relate to the inhibition of potentially-lethal injury fraction realization.

This sounds like a lot, a heck of a lot, of caffeine. A cup of coffee has about 80-100 mg of caffeine in it. And typically a person weighing 70 of 80 Kg has one or two, or maybe even four cups of it a day. Here they are giving the mice the equivalent of 70 or 80 cups of coffee in one shot! I’m surprised the caffeine doesn’t kill them instead of the radiation killing them. If a human took 5600 - 8000 mg of caffeine in one dose, I suspect it might kill them, or at least cause some very bad heart issues.

A woman wrote a book recently on US Navy bariatric chambers. She was an expert in the navy dealing with submarines.

She was interviewed on NPR.

When asked about antioxidants she said she had done some calculations. On one breath of air if you wanted the full effects of antioxidants you would need to drink 146 bottles of merlot.

YMMV

After that much caffeine, a dose of radiation would just smooth him out.

So skip the coffee, and go to the gas station to buy one of the caffeine shots they sell?

That’s how these kinds of studies are done, whether it is caffeine, radiation, aspartame or red dye 40.

" the local “news” last night, trotted out more propaganda about coffee."

my pet peeve is the media hyping a location as “best beach” in country, or “best town” in country,…
Every time I see those media puff pieces/opinions I figure the local Chamber of Commerce outbid all of the other CofC’s in the country for the ranking.

It doesn’t help that the area roads are currently overwhelmed with tourists, and road reconstruction. Would like to see a media piece stating " Man, avoid XYZ, the traffic is brutal, not worth the trip up". I’m not holding my breath waiting for it, lol.

Channel 4, here in Motown, runs it’s “people’s choice” awards every year. yawn. Last week, one of the local “news” programs reported on the “Taco Festival” in, iirc, Royal Oak. Except about 99% of the “report” was about one particular guy and his food truck.

Don’t worry. If we have regime change in Lansing in a couple years, all that road maintenance money will be taken away from MDOT, and used to fund another tax cut for the “JCs”.

If you do not clean your bathtub you can keep down the cost of your bathing.

And the cost of your “flavored” coffee…
