Covid booster jab 2

I checked Beaumont Health System’s web site. It said they didn’t do covid vaccinations at their clinics anymore. The site had a list of links to find places to be jabbed.

Scribbled down a County Health Dept location nearby, takes walk-ins 4-8pm on Tuesdays.

Then had an idea. Went to the grocery store’s web site. I get my flu shots there and I know they had the covid vax. Made an appointment for Wednesday mid-afternoon.

I’ve received the two Pfizer booster shots at Safeway – no appointment required. They put you in this fancy wood paneled room that was supposed to be an Elizabeth Holmes’ Theranos lab, then the pharmacist usually appears in 5-10 minutes.

I forgot to add this. That’s why we have the fancy wood paneled room at the local Safeway pharmacy.

Safeway ex-CEO says company did ‘at least 100 hours’ of due diligence on Theranos before signing deal
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/10/12/safeway-ex-ceo-we-did-at-lea…

The deal, valued at nearly $400 million, resulted in 969 Safeway stores being remodeled in preparation for the blood-testing machines. Safeway dissolved its partnership with Theranos in 2015, two years after Burd retired.

A 100 hours of due diligence doesn’t sound like much on a $400 million contract. I would have at least made sure that the lab testing machine worked.

What concerned me about the first booster, at the Beaumont clinic where my GP works, is the random flow of patients for the shot, and the limited shelf life of the vax after it has been thawed. The county health department probably has the same crew that does walk-in jabs going to a different site each day, so they have a chance of using up all of a thawed vial before it expires. The grocery store sets appointments, so they know how many people will show up. The appointment times are all clustered on Wednesday through Friday, so vials thawed on Wednesday will still be good on Friday.

I remember the news reporting, last summer, on how interest in being vaccinated fell off by May or June. They reported from a pop-up vax clinic down south, in a vax resistant area, that had opened that morning with 700 doses prepared, and only about a dozen people showed up through the day.

This second booster will use the last open line on my CDC vax card. Then what?

When they run out of room on the front, they put stickers on the back.

I’m on the back already after the 1st booster.

My county shut down its mass vaccination site, and switched to giving vaccines by appointment at its usual clinics.
The pharmacy at my local Albertsons supermarket now provides Covid vaccinations to walk-ins, so I got my 2nd Pfizer booster there with no appointment. I’d already been getting my flu shots there, so they already had all my insurance info. Only one person ahead of me, so only a very short wait.

Did they follow the protocol for thawing? I can’t verify, so am just taking a leap of faith that they’re a reputable enough place that they probably got it right.

I’m thinking that going forward, a booster each April and October will be about right. Maybe combine the October one with my flu shot, if convenience is important, but supposedly they’re slightly more effective when administered separately (i.e., 2 weeks apart), so we’ll see.

You staple the first card to the ace of spades in a card deck and put the king in the on deck position.
