Electric car road trip -- PBS News hour

I have posted a number of new stories and even an academic paper pointing out the problems with chargers in the country (and others).

Hear, hear!

Rempel et al.
“This study evaluated the functionality of the charging system for 657 EVSE (electric vehicle service equipment) CCS connectors (combined charging system) on all 181 open, public DCFC (direct current fast chargers) charging stations in the Greater Bay Area…Overall, 72.5% of the 657 EVSEs were functional.”

Note that I am not disputing the charger problems being reported in the PBS report at all. What I am saying is that we don’t need report after report of random problems but rather more studies like the one you posted. The PBS report is more like a reporter’s boondoggle…a chance to go drive a loaned Rivian for a couple of days.
The well-known report you cited checked lots of stations and did a follow up a few days later to see if any maintenance had been done (answer: mostly not).

I agree. However, I am a science type and there are a lot of data nerds here. Many, many news reports start off with a personalized account; I think it is something they teach in journalism school. It is to draw in the readers.

Yes, it’s called ‘human interest,’ don’t write without it!

When I was writing about sailboat racing one newspaper would not accept my stories if not accompanied with a picture of a lovely bikini clad girl.

Surely that’s part of the reason for sailboats…
