extension question

I use the H&R Block software. When trying to e-file, it told me my prior year AGI didn’t match the IRS’s records and rejected my efile. And because my Federal return was rejected, it won’t file my State return at this point. I went to the IRS site and requested a copy of my return to see what they think my AGI was. This despite also using H&R Block last year so it pre-populated my AGI in this year’s e-filing attempt, which also matches my records. I assumed they must have changed something about my return though I don’t recall getting any such notice and can’t find anything in my records. So now I wait for this to arrive in the mail. Meanwhile, I’m filing an extension and paying what I owe. But my question is on my State return. The software isn’t saying anything about what to do with my State return. As it so happens, I am due a refund from NJ, so no taxes to pay. Since I don’t expect this to be resolved by April 18th, can I just e-file my NJ return after the due date once I resolve the AGI issue and, hopefully, the software will be able to e-file? Or do people recommend I file by mail to get it in before the 18th?

The AGI used to file is from the return as filed. It shouldn’t matter if the IRS made a change to your AGI. If nothing is showing on your IRS account then it is unlikely that the IRS has made any changes. Have you tried using $0 for the 2020 AGI?

The other option is using the 2020 self-selected pin. Filing on paper maybe the best option.

Special Instructions to Validate Your 2021 Electronic Tax Return
If your 2020 tax return has not yet been processed, enter $0 (zero dollars) for your prior year adjusted gross income (AGI).

If you used the Non-Filers tool in 2021 to register for an advance Child Tax Credit payment or third Economic Impact Payment in 2021, enter $1 as your prior year AGI.

When self-preparing your taxes and filing electronically, you must sign and validate your electronic tax return by entering your prior-year Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) or your prior-year Self-Select PIN.

They cashed my check last year’s return so the thought that it wasn’t processed never entered my mind. But I’ll try entering $0 and see if that works. Fingers crossed, thanks!
