F150 Lightning the iPhone of cars

The reviewer makes a strong case for the Ford EV pickup.

Unfortunately, to me though, he can’t make a strong case for the price.

Well, that was a fully loaded version, here’s the base model for less than half that price:

I’d need to know a bit more abut how it could handle towing a small, 24’ RV trailer, if it could do a decent range, it would be a possibility… Altho, I’m not sure if we’re really up to long trips anymore anyway…

Can’t make a great case for the price of new iPhones, either. So your title is quite apt.

–Peter <== buys used iPhones whenever new ones come out. Kind of the same approach I have to cars.

24’ is not small. It’s on the long end of mid sized.

if it could do a decent range,

We both know it won’t have a decent range towing anything. My recollection is in the 100-150 mile range while towing moderate loads. Probably less with your 24 footer.

That doesn’t mean it’s a bad truck at all. But for now, electric vehicles of most types are best suited to shorter trips.

PS - Wonder if you could load up an extra 2000 lbs of battery in the bed to increase your towing range.

Well, at the time we bought the 24’ trailer it was a lightweight model of the time, about 2–4… Towed it with that Chevy K2500 with all of 200 HP… Now the gasser F150 is 300 Hp, but a large tank for towing, 38 gallons, so it’s a bit of a jolt today at our CA Costco prices, even… And short tripping is killing my mileage, a 12.8 average over the last few years…

But if I was 20 years younger, still doing more of my own yard/construction, I’d like to try the new one… Tough to justify, tho… Likely end up with a smaller SUV, dunno, can’t see that for out…

We are looking to replace DW’s Civic, she wants the new lane warnings and other toys…

My, I’m OK for quite a while with my '06 F150 4x4 Crew… But I dream…

Bad time to sell any of my AAPL to cover either…

Watching…

Chevy K2500 with all of 200 HP

Diesel? Low HP, high torque.

No, it was gas, the olde 350 engine, 1995. Was in need, working in the wilds of Fresno, prior 6 cal wasn’t hacking it, wanted a supercab shortbed, but Ford wasn’t doing them yet, so leased it. It ate the 350, so a new GoodWrench, also ate 2 transmissions, I was on the road a lot, no time for real service, the quick change oil guys don’t change the internal filter… Lesson learned… Ended up buying it after the lease as the mileage was way up there… Eventually sold it off, bought the F150 Crew shortbed, gained the tow package, and 100 HP with the 5.4L… Run synthetics in everything since the Chevy days… No more disasters… No more Chevy’s either…

Yeah - I haven’t been to terribly impressed with my 2007 Silverado. Lotsa failed seals; axles, trans, and differential.
The engine seems fairly bullet proof however. I only paid 22K for it new. 4WD. Probably worth it.

When I was looking in 1995, I like the GMC, and would have had one, 2WD, but the company, AT&T Corporate Leasing, couldn’t find me an extended cab shortbed, but they did find the K2500 4WD at the same price as a 2WD, but hadn’t said anything about it. So on a Sunday I went to a local dealer to pick it up, just a signature handed me the keys. So I go out to the lot, get in, “Hey, what’s that on the floor?” Went back to the office and only then did anyone tell me I had opted into a 4x4… So at that point I was hooked, came in handy for maneuvering the trailer, I even added a front hitch receiver, but in the end never needed it.

But I was disappointed in the engine, trans failures, The 4x4 engagement failure we tracked back to the dealer’s install of the warranty trans replacement, a bent pin, but by then I’d already ordered up the vacuum engagement system, so had that put in. I’d followed my bro’s Jeep off the fire road to go pull out a boulder, but when I went to back up, in 4x4, discovered it was only 2WD, so my bro’s old 1945 Jeep had to tow me back out and onto the fire road… Irritating. So overall it did what I needed, but it cost me as only the one trans was under warranty…

Back to Fords, a used '06 F150 Crew 4x4 with towing option from over in Napa via craigslist… So far so good!

Here is a towing range test of the F-150 Lightning:

Result: less than 100 mile range while towing, with the large battery pack. Not a viable option for any real distance.

But for what I view as the common grocery-getter owner, it could still be pretty attractive.

Sticker price on that truck (with it's options) is north of $93,000. You still want to get one to pick up milk 'n eggs?

As for towing, this truck didn't have two adults and three children in it. It also did not have any cargo in the trailer.

Realistically, you would have to add about 800 lbs for one quad runner, and 600 lbs for wife and three teenage boys. Another 600 lbs for food, tents, clothing and other misc tools and toys.

That's a total of around 2,000 lbs more to the tow. With all that added, you would be lucky to get 65-75 miles out of one charge. And that's if you are not going up hill.

No thanks,

  1. No shortage of people paying that much for top trim levels of ICE powered trucks (and passenger cars for that matter). And many of them just use their truck as an every day driver.

  2. Prices for the Lightning start at less than half that amount.

  3. If you tow a meaningful amount or distance, then you are not the target audience for this truck. I’ve not seen anyone claim otherwise.

I occasionally go out of town with my horse, so an ICE truck is what I need. I still think the Lightning is an attractive truck. Were it not for my specific requirements, I would give it consideration.
