Asparagus in winter, pears from Argentina, Peruvian blueberries and Californian almonds — these are just a few of the several thousand products shoppers can buy when they enter a supermarket.
Food consumption is the main driver of negative environmental impacts generated by the average European citizen, according to the European Commission.
Food consumption has been increasing worldwide for decades. High-income countries, including the US and Germany, take in the most calories per capita. At the same time, the UN estimates that households globally throw away 11% of the total food available for consumption, although this statistic does not include low-income countries. So why do we buy more food than we can eat?
climate scientists say change, including moderating our diets, is exactly what’s needed to bring down greenhouse gas emissions from food. That means eating less red meat and more plant-based foods. Opting for seasonal produce rather than buying, say, strawberries in winter can also make a difference.

Climate scientists should post their audited menus! I think they eat strawberries in winter.
BTW, cherries are in season in Portugal and they are plump and delicious! While one gets lots of seasonal fruit one also gets imports from all over the world, avocados from Israel, coconut milk from South East Asia, bananas from Latin America, and ethic food from all over.

Meanwhile climate change can mean that crops farmers have been raising for generations can no longer be grown. Major shifts in agriculture could be coming. And farmers may require a while to figure it out and adapt.
This is potentially a major factor in future food supply.

This might be true, I don’t know. But at least there is some purpose to growing food and shipping it a long distance before it is consumed…
Meanwhile, we have companies like Evian. They collect water from a spring in France, bottle it in one-time-use plastic and ship it around the world for people to drink. Because, well, you know, their water is so unique and healthy that it makes so much sense to do this.
And…
They even have a sustainability web page:

And not to just pick on them, there are numerous other companies that bottle water and ship it around the world too.

Evain is just #10 on the list (owned by #4)
