He’s sniveling about Korean and Japanese cars coming in to the US nearly tariff free, while TI threatens fat tariffs on Mexican and Canadian cars.
Farley has not noticed there are not floods of Koreans and Japanese coming into the US to “take jobs away” from low education USians? He has not noticed that the bulk of cars coming from Mexico and Canada, have Ford and Chevrolet nameplates, because those are the companies that have created so much resentment by closing factories in the US, and replacing them with production in Mexico? The entire “national security” narrative used to support the Mexico and Canada tariffs was about pandering to the base, by bellowing about the “invasion”. What excuse does Farley have, for demanding fat tariffs on Japanese and Korean cars, other than his own compensation, for his Welchist administration of an ever shrinking company?
In aggregate? Without my stopping to count them, it’s pretty close. Due to the protectionist actions of a second rate actor, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru established a pretty solid US manufacturing base. Hyundai builds some models here too. The thing is, from what I have seen, labor rates in Japan and Korea are not dramatically lower than in the US, unlike the Mexican labor rates that Ford enjoys in it’s two Mexican plants.
Any vehicles produced in USA shouldn’t have any tariffs imposed. If tariffs are imposed on foreign automakers; more foreign owned USA factories will be created.
They don’t. Here is some interesting reading: the 2022 Made In America index. There is a table here that lists cars by specific make and model, and the percent of US/Canadian content. I don’t understand the order the table presents them, but there are a lot of Fords with only 50-55% US/Canadian content, and a lot of US built Hondas with 60-70% US/Canadian content.
Another table on the page shows that, since 2015, the big three have reduced their percentage of US/Canadian content, while several foreign brands have increased their use of US/Canadian content.
Farley singled out imports from Japan and South Korea that have little to no duties compared with the 25% tariff President Donald Trump has threatened Canada and Mexico with in recent weeks.
It seems Farley wants tariffs impose on Japanese & Korean automakers.
It’s “unfair” that are cheaper priced foreign models vehicle endangers Ford’s strategy of selling mostly high priced models by drawing demand from legacy automakers. Toyota & Kia & Hyundai have 3 seat large SUVs. Toyota has the full sized Tundra which can be cheaper than a f 150.
“Just what is the point of political campaign contributions if the domestic government won’t protect you?” ponders Farley.
After all, “Ford will be the Porsche of off road”. HARHARHAR…delusional nonsense.
Yeah. How dare they not give us an advantage over companies that sell superior products at competitive prices? The nerve! They need to product our profits. The customers don’t matter. Don’t bore me with wokie blather about “value for money” or “consumer choice” They are only a ledger entry under “source of funds”,
