IBD Data for Selective Companies

Below you will note some IBD data, subject to interpretation, that may, or may not, help with a current perspective on a select group of companies. Please note that I am a known mangler of data and anything you see here should be verified within the context of investing knowledge and interpretive usefulness.

I have an IBD subscription that I typically use to obtain potential investing ideas as well as a review tool for monthly analysis of my portfolio. While I currently have no growth portfolio, I thought I would review some marginally relevant data for some common growth names. I don’t own Upstart (or any stocks) and don’t have an opinion either way whether Upstart is a good investment or bad investment. But I do track three things about Upstart – insider selling, hiring, and short sales. Purely out of curiosity.

Last year insiders sold $65 million of their stock. They only sold $11 million in the first half of last year, so went gangbusters in the second half. This year so far they’ve sold $15 million in the first half. Curious to see what they do in the second half. I can empathize. Last night I had two cookies and then went back for a sundae.

They’ve quadrupled their job postings this quarter from last year at this time. Appears Upstart’s excited.

The smart money doesn’t seem all that excited. Upstart’s still looking for love.

Best to you,
Ears

P.S., the usual disclaimer…this is not an endorsement or rejection of Upstart, anyone’s investing style, yadda, yadda, yadda.

If the numbers I presented were the equivalent to a college football poll, UPST’s rank of 23rd is very similar to a successful G5 having an extraordinary season. Their recent ER being about the same as beating a mid level SEC or Big 12 school by 7-14 points. Thereafter, just as UPST guided BIGLY going forward - it’s just like the pretty good G5 fans now predicting they are going to the Playoffs.

Perhaps worth a small Scout Team bet but I wouldn’t go overboard with the enthusiasm or the expectations.
