Investment advice for Children

I am sure many of us would benefit from advice for investments for children?

As you are looking for a longer hold period than the 5 years Motley suggest,it would be good if Motley had a specific section on this, so that we have more information to cover?

Many of us would like to contribute to assist in starting their own portfolio, ( I wish I had started 40 years ago!)

Hopefully you pick this up and act positively?

If a company can crack this nut, they will truly be the next Microsoft or Tesla in terms of returns in my view.

I believe this can not be accomplished until there is a way to establish the value or delayed gratification in the mind of humans.

Hi, newbieinvestor01.

Generally speaking, the same rules investing for adults apply to kids - money you (or they) will need in the next 3-5 years should not be invested. You don’t want a market downturn to impact their ability to utilize the funds when you need them.

Otherwise, plan to hold your (or their) investments for 3-5 years (or longer).

That said, here are a couple Fool School articles I found that cover both investing for a child and by a child:

Who notes it is important to make sure your retirement ducks in a row before lining up ducks for your kids, but thinks when it comes to teaching kids the value of investing, it is more important to pick investment opportunities that will keep their interest than it is to achieve outsized gains…
