I had trouble connecting so i only heard about half.
Amzn - mdb thinks it is great news for them. Dealing with 40-50 years of inertia of a relational databases. Now amzn anouncment shows future is document database. 2nd it increase awareness of mongodb and atlas. They think they can win the “best” database hands down right now any increase in awareness is good for them. Document db has significantly fewer features. Marketing says amzn “supports” 3.6 api…MDB thinks they only support 1/3 of what 3.6 does.
Something I didn’t appreciate before. MDB owns the IP, they use their license, initially AGPL now SSPL to license their own IP. There was no opensource project before MDB like with many of the other open source vendors out there (cloudera, hadoop). MDB could go closed source at any point if they choose.
reiterated their competitive strength. 1) huge developer mindshare 2) gaining wallet share 3) increasingly they are seen as an integral part of the IT spend
They said this isn’t a winner take all market. Huge TAM, there will always be multiple vendors.
I had mostly bought back in due to the great discussions we had on this board, but i bought the rest of my position back after listening.
- I don’t think amzn is as big of a threat as I initially thought
- Foodles had a great post about the timing of all this. Namely that sales aren’t going to just drop off a cliff and we have lots of time to see how this plays out.
- Big enough space for multiple companies to operate in.
