BYD EV Teardown In Japan Reveals The Secret To Its Affordability

China is way ahead of Japan (and most of the world) when it comes to EVs, and it doesn’t look like it will catch up anytime soon

  • The integration of multiple components into a single drive unit that BYD calls E-Axle was the most impressive part.
  • Between the E-Axle and the economies of scale that BYD can achieve, it can sell its EVs at very affordable prices that non-Chinese automakers simply can’t match.

“E-Axle” used by BYD, which is comprised of eight different components.
It includes not only the motor, inverter, transmission and controller but also the onboard AC charger, the DC-to-DC converter and the battery monitoring system (BMS).

finding an EV charger — particularly an operational, available and fast one — still requires far more prep and research than filling up a combustion vehicle.
Tesla made finding an EV charger particularly easy for its owners. The driver can search for nearby Tesla stations on the infotainment screen.

We need to up our game in USA.

Is Hyundai bringing its most affordable EV to the US?

After opening pre-orders for its smallest and most affordable in July, starting at just $23,000 (31.5 million won), the Casper Electric is already Hyundai’s best-selling EV in Korea.
This EV is smallish in size. Similar in size to a Mini Cooper. 200-225 mile range.

NIO made a statement after launching the Onvo L60 last month, starting at just over $21,000 (149,900 yuan).

The electric SUV undercuts top-selling rivals, including Tesla’s Model Y, which starts at about $35,000 (249,900 yuan) in China.

Although the $21,000 price tag is for the battery subscription model, even with the battery included, NIO’s new electric SUV starts at roughly $29,000 (206,900 yuan).

After piloting 400 BrightDrop vans for customer deliveries, Walmart is now officially adding them to its fleet. Back in 2022, BrightDrop inked a deal with Walmart to reserve 5,000 of its vans, including the larger 600 models (the number refers to the approximate square footage of cargo space). But this time around, Walmart is opting for the smaller 400 versions of the electric van, with the retail giant not specifying how many vans it will deploy this year.

The electric vans run on GM’s Ultium battery platform, with the latest versions of both the 600 and 400 able to drive 272 miles of combined city and highway driving on a single charge, according to GM.

Tesla has hired a celebrity ambassador, a departure from Elon Musk’s policy of not paying for celebrity endorsements.

Musk has often bragged about the fact that Tesla doesn’t pay for celebrity endorsements in contrast to other automakers who hire celebrity brand ambassadors to promote their cars.

Much like advertising, Musk seems to be abandoning this strategy.

Tesla announced that it hired Olympic shooter Kim Ye-ji, whose performance at the Paris Olympics this summer went viral, to be the automaker’s brand ambassador in Korea.

The competitive landscape has changed. Tesla no longer owns the EV market space. Adapt or die.

Tesla and BYD are the top dawgs in EV sales.
NIO & Xpeng are yapping on their trail.
NIO & Xpeng still have not reach profitability yet. But if they continue to grow at the same pace I expect they will cross that line fairly soon.

Net losses for the quarter to Sept. 30 widened to 5.44 billion renminbi ($775.2 million), or RMB2.50 per American depositary share, from RMB4.69 billion, or RMB2.67 per ADS, in the same period a year ago…

Revenue fell 2.1%, to RMB18.67 billion ($2.66 billion) from RMB19.07 billion, while the FactSet consensus called for a slight increase to RMB19.10 billion.

The bottom- and top-line misses came even after Nio had previously reported “record-breaking” third-quarter deliveries that increased 11.6% from a year ago to 61,855 EVs.

Chinese EV maker Xpeng to break even later next year, president says

its President Brian Gu said, betting that strong demand for its new models and expanding into new overseas markets will improve its profitability.

Meeting the goal Xpeng first set in 2023 could make it the first Chinese automaker to turn profitable mainly on EV sales. Rivals BYD and Li Auto (2015.HK), opens new tab are profitable but they rely on hybrids for the majority of total car sales.

Gu said the company has also been discussing with “dozens” of players in the auto industry on smart driving collaborations.

Xpeng is among Chinese developers of advanced assisted driving systems that have their own large AI models, similar to what Tesla has been doing with its Full-Self Driving, which is expected to be rolled out in China in the first quarter of 2025.
