This has been in my mind for a while…and I thought it may be best to put it out now and start earnestly from 2023 (rather than start the new year with whining).
I am new to stock investing, and started out in Jan 2021…I had invested using only Motley Fool stock advisor service…and I couldn’t have picked up a more horrible time to invest in growth stocks, or a worse stock advisory service for this period (I am not accusing them… perhaps the wrong stocks for the wrong market…and most importantly for the worst investor, me]…And I panicked when the market started turning down within a week or so of me investing…Unfortunately, I panicked and put more and more in all those HORRIBLE stocks ( There are two things common in all of these… everything is recommended by stock advisor and these are all now down by more than 70-95%)…However, the fault is entirely mine for getting into these without knowing what I was doing…I could have, should have (and normally for any other matter, would have), paused to see what the heck was going on…but no, I was completed shell-shocked and could not bear the thought of losing out “20%” in just a few months of investing {how dare I even call this investing}…and the false hope (nothing but hope that it will recover quickly) and fear of losing money made me hold on to these garbage companies…and now these are unbelievably down…I have lost more than 70% of my entire portfolio worth …
I am trying to be kind to Motley fool stock advisor but I am just astounded that, as a stock advisory service, they did not warn what was happening (I could see and hear from every media outlet that the FED has not yet even started raising rates or the Quantitative tightening, ad once that starts it may cause a huge headwind….but I thought that the very fact that stock advisory service is still actively recommending the same kind of non-profitable growth stocks meant it was just fear mongering from media and the worst was over…how wrong I was!)
I guess I was completely drowned with strong emotions and despair, and still can not believe what has happened… Money that was saved painstakingly by working for over 25 years and living frugally has gone away from me, thanks to MY IGNORANCE.
but I think I have got to the realization now that this money lost is unlikely to come back anytime soon…and me holding to stocks without actual conviction but just based on hope is madness!
However, I did not write this to just get it off my chest…I truly want to learn and see if there was a way that I can atone for what I have done to my family. I stopped looking at stock advisor and tried what I could this year by buying what I thought were reasonably good companies, and well, that did not pane out well either except for Berkshire (BIG thanks to Jim mungofitch).
- I have learnt what NOT to do…. VERY EXPENSIVE LESSON but may be better at this age when I am able to work for another 5 to 10 years, rather than at a stage when I was retired.
- I want to learn what to do…and have started out with Mr. Buffet’s letters…. however, I do feel I have to do something more imminently to stop the constant depletion of whatever is left in my portfolio
- I am stuck as to whether I sell everything and put into say Berkshire or SP500, and move on with my life….I guess that is the easy way out…but not sure if I can make even 50% of my loss back and may have to live with lifelong guilt….or I can invest most of that fund in Berkshire/ sp500 and use portion of it for buying individual stocks under proper guidance, while learning along the process …. I want to try and learn if it is truly possible to produce generational wealth by picking individual stocks…I know 100% that I can not do that on my own, certainly not now when I know nothing about valuing or identifying opportunities…
- I am hoping to get advice from the senior experienced members, who may have experiences of huge loss such as may be in the 2000s or 2008; and managed to survive and make up all the losses or even make profits. What did you do and how did you go about it?
- Are there any reliable stock picking portfolio services or wealth management services that are actually good…Of course, I don’t expect any service to be always right….but while I lost more than 70%, Nasdaq lost 30% and SP 500 20%, there are actually people who have made a huge profit by investing in energy stocks (it is crazy but I did think about this last December/ early Jan this year…and then gave up, as I thought I lost the opportunity as those stocks were already up significantly compared to 2020….wow, again, how little do I know)… So, I was hoping to see if there are actually any good stock advisor services that the members have used/ are using …Would be very grateful for any advice on this.
Thank you and wishing everyone a wonderful new year (can’t wait for 2022 to finish),
