National Retail Federation (NRF) CEO Matthew Shay warned that shoppers could face higher prices on an array of goods if President-elect Trump’s proposed tariffs on imports to the U.S. are implemented.
“The adoption of across-the-board tariffs on consumer goods and other non-strategic imports amounts to a tax on American families,” Shay said in a statement to FOX Business. “It will drive inflation and price increases and will result in job losses.”
The NRF, the largest U.S. retail trade group, estimated in a recent study that Trump’s proposed new tariffs could cost American consumers between $46 billion and $78 billion in spending power annually.
That’s what Adam Smith said about the Corn Laws.

We will see what happens but we could be seeing another iteration of the Corn laws only on a more massive basis.
Why do you think the American people have allowed tariffs on lumber imports for so long? It is one of the reason’s housing is higher.
Not everyone is a loser with Corn Laws.
- Tariffs are protectionism
- Who do they protect?
- Producers?
- Consumers?
Did American people allow tariffs on lumber or was it American lumber or the American government? If you don’t protest you lose.

I think most of them do not even know about them. They have been on for decades and recently were just doubled. Doesn’t make sense to me because who wouldn’t want other people cutting down their trees so you can keep yours? Well the lumber industry.
Already demonstrated by the washing machine example, from TFG’s last go around.
Steve
Tried to find example for Canadian tariffs, because I have been a buy/fix guy for my homes going on twenty years now…but found one for TFG and Chinese tariffs…
LOL!!! From the Heritage Foundation even…
Tariffs on Canadian Lumber Are Hurting American Homebuyers | The Heritage Foundation
The average price for a new house has increased $1,360 since President Donald Trump’s tariff plan was announced in December.
On August 19, 2024, the US raised tariff rates on imports of Canadian softwood lumber products from 8.05% to 14.54%.
Like I said the Tariffs have been about for decades and even when you tell people about it they can’t seem to find information on it.
Softwood lumber is used for residential and commercial construction, decking, fencing, siding, furniture, and plenty of other construction and manufacturing applications .
