Apple adding AppleTV+ to their offering which will be an app for your phone, tablet, or MAC soon instead of the tradition brick connected to your TV. Also mentioned if you look down enough on the page is a comment that the AppleTV app will becoming to SmartTV’s soon. I wonder if it is meant to be the OS for the TV or will it be an App available on a SmartTV…
FWIW no netflix on apple’s new app
That makes me think that it is an App and not an OS. A bit more searching seems to oonfirm this, so it really won’t compete with Roku
It’ll all happen on an increasingly wide range of devices, too, as Apple will bring its Apple TV app to a surprising number of competing TVs and set-top boxes. It’s hitting Samsung smart TVs this spring, and then Amazon Fire TV, LG, Sony, Roku, and Vizio devices in the future.

The AppleTV will be an app, not an OS for the TV. Since Roku is an OS, AppleTV will reside as an app inside of Roku.

I’m an OTA Tivo fan.
I have a Roku rattling around somewhere that I don’t use anymore. I can record 4 shows at once, I can download recorded shows to my iPhone to watch on the road.
Apple TV has been around for some time. It is weakly developed and has posed no threat to Roku apart from a handful of fanbois.
Apple would rather take on Netflix than Roku, having recently announced the intent to develop “original programming” (playing catchup to NFLX, AMZN, DIS).
