Back in the ‘80s, I lived in Terre Haute, IN in the heart of Indiana coal country. I received a phone call from a trucker. He was hauling coal and then sand for the glass plant in the return trip. The glass plant was complaining that the sand he hauled caused smoking.
It turned out the coal was washed prior to loading, but to keep it from freezing solid in cold weather, they sprayed it with diesel fuel. The smoke came from the oil residues.
I recommended they power wash the truck bed with a common detergent. Detergents these days are biodegradable and easily treated in a sewage treatment plant. The oil gets emulsified making it easy to process too. (Spraying with detergent is one way to treat oil spills in the ocean.)
Oils are commonly used in metalworking to cool and lubricate tools and prevent rusting. They must be removed before painting. Hence, industrial processes that clean parts with detergents are common these days (now that vapor degreasing is frowned on).

I use a similar concept at home.
Today, when I have a pan or some dish with lots of oily residue, to be washed, I will dump enough dish detergent concentrate on it to emulsify the oils and then rinse it down the drain.
I ASSUME this helps prevent a clog in my local drain pipes, as well as further down the system.

Wow, never even thought about this. It’s hard work and it’s definitely a much needed expense for shipper’s.
Thx for sharing this.
