You are right; they can be. That is one of the things that differentiates them from theologians, pundits, and conspiracy theorists. Scientists try to fit their understandings to the facts versus ignoring the facts that do not fit their beliefs.

According to this definition a pundit could be a scientist, having gotten the expertise via the scientific method.

That leaves theologians, and conspiracy theorists.

I like Neil deGrasse Tyson but, like Jordan Peterson, often he spouts about stuff he does not know about. I would like Jordan Peterson better if he didn’t interrupt so often.

Religion must have been useful in the dawn of civilization but in time it became an instrument of power, for example, The Divine Right of Kings.

Unfortunately those satisfied by their faiths have become the dominant paradigms again. I am afraid that we have enter the un-renaissance, the un-enlightenment, maybe the dim ages.
