Golf is a mental game.
At this week’s PGA tournament in Ft. Worth TX a player was 5 over par after 16 holes, quit playing and withdrew from the tournment, then returned to his hotel room and committed suicide.

It’s also noteable that golfers are real troopers. While it’s not unusual for an NFL football game to be suspended if a player is injured and nearly dies on the field, the golf tournamant will continue.

People do not suicide because of golf.
Murray has been open about having struggled with alcoholism and mental health in the past.
Actually 2 or 3 PGA Tour players have stopped playing for extended periods of time to “protect their mental health”.
Also a problem with domestic violence.

those guys have very short careers where they’re in top 50 or so and playing for big money, for the most part. They don’t get paid if they don’t play well ( LIV golfers cashed in, they don’t even have to deal with making cuts, but it’s not that way on PGA tour ). The well-known guys are rolling in endorsement money, but guys like Grayson Murray are not. Huge internal pressure to perform on these guys, and it’s a weekly thing. I’d say there is more pressure on PGA pro’s than NBA and MLB guys with the guaranteed contracts.

Yes true. I have met very good pro shop guys who are alcoholics. Terrible stories of hardship. The almost made it stuff. Very hard. There are far more of them than anything else at the top of the golf world.
Grayson Murray made $6 million during his career. He minimally made $1 million plus after his sponsors took their cut. He probably had over $2 million to show for it.
Suicidal ideations do not have to do with life’s conditions. People come through much worse without the ideations. Suicidal ideations can be triggered by alcoholism and drugs but generally were not caused by them.
I will say I have only been exposed to one person in my life who was suicidal. Her depths of despair for me to feel were unbearable. I was close enough to know how she felt. I have never felt anything else that was so horrifying.
RIP Grayson it was a harder life.

The propensity for the ideation may have genetic factors. Having the genetics may not be conclusive. I do not know.
I agree environment can lead to depression and other conditions. All of that together does not mean the ideation occurs.

It’s hard to say. I certainly don’t understand his reasons. Maybe we shouldn’t pretend like we understand the reasons behind others’ struggles. It’s called empathy.
