SUMMARY
US and international to date research suggests that individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are responsible for approximately 10% of all homicides in the United States. For mass killings, the percentage is approximately 33% (see “Serious Mental Illness and Mass Homicide”). One study reported that homicide rates are higher in states with stricter commitment laws, thus making it more difficult to treat mentally ill individuals who are in need of treatment.

In 2019, the estimated number of murders in the nation was 16,425. This was a 0.3 percent increase from the 2018 estimate, a 3.4 percent increase from the 2015 figure, and an 11.6 percent increase from the number in 2010. (See Tables 1 and 1A.)

Schizophrenia is not a terribly common disease but it can be a serious and chronic one. Worldwide about 1 percent of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and approximately 1.2% of Americans (3.2 million) have the disorder.

Annual prevalence among U.S. adults, by condition: Major Depressive Episode: 8.4% (21 million people) Schizophrenia: <1% (estimated 1.5 million people) Bipolar Disorder: 2.8% (estimated 7 million people)

My point stands most murders and most mass murders are mentally healthy but very angry.

That is true. My point, however, was that the schizophrenic and bipolar population are over-represented in those who commit homicide.

Meaning that all the recent hot air about mental illness is diversion, because mental illness is associated with a minority of perps.

The posturing about raising the age to purchase to 21 is also useless. Dylann Roof was over 21, by 2 months. The perp that shot up Oxford HS is only 15. His parents gave him the gun as a birthday present. Kyle Rittenhouse was only 17, borrowed the gun from a friend.

All diversion, because no-one wants to talk about the obvious: when a nation is awash with guns, people with violent intent will easily get their hands on one.

Shinyland has the 59th highest murder rate, by all means, in the world, at 6.3/100,000, ranking between Tanzania and Bolivia. Canada’s rate is 2.0. UK, France, Sweden at 1.2. Germany 0.8. Italy 0.5.
